Perú
1. Background
Technology has evolved over time. Unfortunately, not all of us can adapt, and I am referring to the group of older adults who are finding it increasingly difficult to use apps and websites. Our society is becoming increasingly dependent on these technologies, as they make our lives and processes easier. The fact that an older adult has a device shows their need and motivation to learn, since through it they can manage services related to Administrations, make appointments with medical specialists, talk to family or friends or stay in touch with those who are far away.
But why does this happen? The prestigious journal Neuron, which publishes articles related to neurons and cells, has published a study in which the cause is the deterioration of neurons related to learning and which are called giant cholinergic interneurons of the striatum. As we grow older, these neurons deteriorate, and learning to process things in a new way becomes more complicated, but not impossible.
2. Interview summary
That is why we decided to interview the elderly people around us to find out their perspectives on the situation.
Q1. Do you personally struggle with navigating through the world with technology?
- Yes, while it is true that I can do the most basic things, like making calls, sending messages, watching YouTube videos and taking photos, I think I am not taking full advantage of my phone's potential.
Q2. What can you do through your smartphone? (ex. Calling or messaging or using the internet.)
- I like to send messages to my family, search Google for topics I don't know about, and take photos of my trips.
Q3. What kind of technological advancements are difficult for you to use?
-I can't use Yape very well (it's an app that allows you to make banking transactions from the comfort of your phone), nor can I book medical appointments or use the state websites well.
Q.4. Would you like to receive courses for the management of new technologies?
-Yes, I would like to receive courses on technology management, but it must be easy, short and understandable.
Q. Do you feel heard in your struggles with technology's rise?
- When I don't understand how some apps work, I ask my grandchildren to help me, but I don't know what to do when I'm alone.
3. Conclusion
In conclusion, there is a difficulty in the elderly group in managing technology. Unfortunately, this is not a majority group in Peru. This does not mean that we should not help them. Implementing free courses for this group would be ideal and would improve their quality of life.
